Navigating Electrical Upgrades in Your Michiana Home Remodel

Electrical systems are the backbone of any home — and in a region full of pre-1950 houses, the wiring is often the part of the remodel that matters most. Here's how we approach it.

Whether you're remodeling an older South Bend home or updating a newer place in Granger or Elkhart, the electrical work behind the walls decides how safe and functional the finished space really is. A beautiful kitchen on a maxed-out 100-amp panel is a problem waiting to trip. Here's what we walk every remodel customer through.

Assess what your home actually needs

Modern life is heavy on electricity: induction ranges, EV chargers, workshop tools, home offices. Before any remodel we look at the demands your appliances and devices will put on the system — and whether the panel, circuits and outlets you have can carry them. Many Michiana homes still run on panels sized for 1970s life.

Safety first: wiring and panels in older homes

Much of the housing stock around South Bend, Mishawaka and the county towns predates modern code. During remodels we regularly find aluminum branch wiring, overloaded circuits, ungrounded outlets and undersized panels. A remodel is the cheapest moment to fix these — the walls are already open. Upgrading outdated wiring and panels to meet current code isn't just an inspection checkbox; it prevents real hazards.

Smart-home ready, if you want it

Remodeling is also the right time to think ahead: smart switches and lighting, video doorbells, thermostats, and the neutral wires and boxes they need. We rough in for the technology you want now — and the stuff you might want in five years — while everything is accessible.

Choose licensed professionals (and check)

Electrical work is not the place for the lowest unlicensed bid. Hire licensed and insured pros, ask how permits and inspections will be handled, and get it in writing. That's how we run every TG Renovates project — electrical work included, one accountable crew instead of a hand-off between three companies.

The bottom line

Electrical upgrades can feel complex, but they're essential for a safe, efficient, modern home — especially mid-remodel, when doing it right costs the least. If you're planning a kitchen, bathroom or whole-home project anywhere in the South Bend–Elkhart area, we'll assess the electrical side as part of your free estimate and tell you honestly what needs attention and what doesn't.
